Why do we need a lesson like this? God commands that there are seven annual feasts which must be kept.
We often hear church people say that they are called, or they are chosen, so the question is called to do what? Or chosen to do what?
Let us investigate who got called and for what.
Exodus chapter 19:1-6
The Lord delivers his people Israel out of Egypt and brings them to himself at Mount Sinai and Moses goes up to God to receive some instructions to give to the children of Israel. If you will obey my voice indeed and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar/special treasure unto me above all people:for all the earth is mine. Vs6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
The whole nation was to be a kingdom of priests to bring the message of salvation and reconciliation to all the nations as all had gone astray from God. To teach them the ways of the Lord. God has a protocol so let’s look at it.
The revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servant’s things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it (using signs and symbols) by his angel unto his servant John.
The Father gives the commands to Jesus, who gives it to the angel /holy spirit who gives it to Israel, Israel gives it to the nations.
Leviticus 23:1-2, 3, 4, 5, 6
The Lord told Moses to speak unto the children of Israel saying concerning the feasts of the Lord which ye shall proclaim (announce officially or publicly) to be holy convocations (gatherings) even these are my feasts. He did not say these are the feasts of the Jews, so anyone serving the God of this bible must keep them.
The Lord states the Sabbath day must be kept, he put this in force even before he brought man into existence and sanctified it (set apart) Genesis 2:1-3
These are the Feasts of the Lord which ye shall proclaim (announce officially or publicly) in their season. The feasts are seasonal, we don’t just do them when we feel like.
The seven feasts of the Lord are in order and in which God’s complete plan is revealed.
Passover, Feast of unleavened bread, Pentecost, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles and the Eight Day Feast
Today we are dealing with the day of atonement.
The day of Atonement, is in the 7th month, this is not July, God’s Calendar is totally different in that the new year starts in spring. HOLD YOUR SPOT Exodus 12:1-2, Exodus 13:3-4
The Lord directs that this month shall be the first month of the year to you but what month was it? The month Abib/Aviv is late March to early April
Vs 27 we must have a holy convocation (gathering) you shall afflict your souls (fast) we do not use animal sacrifice anymore because Jesus was sacrificed once and for all for our sins. Hebrews 10:7-10
Vs 28 No servile work (paid work) or domestic work to be done, it is a day of atonement (forgiving or the pardoning of sin) sin is breaking God’s commandments (1 John 3:4) The world at large is in rebellion to God and we have to pay our bills, so if you have to work on the Lord’s feast days then we have no choice but if we can book it off then we must keep it. Please also note for those on medication which requires you to eat then you must eat. Also, children should be taught but not forced to fast but must wait until they are of age where they understand fully.
Leviticus 16:1, 3-11
The Lord had instituted animal sacrifices to atone for the unintentional sins of the people or when they sin through ignorance, so they would not die for their offence. The animal sacrifices pointed to Jesus Christ who would come and die for the sins of mankind once and for all.
Leviticus 23:29-30, 31-32
There was a death penalty for those who would not obey
It is to be a statute (law) forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
No matter what day it falls on, it is declared a Sabbath or a High Day, a day of rest, separate from the regular seventh day sabbath. Because the new day starts at sundown, the day of atonement starts at sundown on the ninth and finishes at sundown on the tenth day of the month of Abib (Aviv) They start counting the days when the full moon arrives over Jerusalem.
Genesis 1:5, 8, 13
The evening and the morning makes the day in God’s order.
God commands us to afflict our souls (fast for a 24-hour period, neither eating nor drinking to remind us of the suffering Jesus Christ had to endure on our behalf. 1 day out of the whole year.
